Full Metal Jacket Analysis

I will analysis one of my favourite part of this movie which is Gomer Pyle go crazy and kill Drill Instructor then suicide.

SCENE OVERVIEW

Gomer Pyle is a fat guy and he always make mistake during their training. therefore he becomes the guy who is jeered and repaired by sergeant frequently. But Private Joker who is his leader take care of him patiently. But the Gomer Pyle can not stop make mistakes all the time. so that angery sergeant punish the whole team, all of his comrade punch and hit him when he was sleeping. This is one of the most important reason why gomer Pyle become strange in his marine life. In another hand when they are training shotting. Drill happen to see he get shot of talent, Drill also appreciate Pyle that he can finally become the great "killing machine" to proceed to the Vietnam War battlefield but unfortunately before the night they going to war this disappointed sence happened.

Sound:

There are diagetic and non-diagetic both sound. The most important sound in this scene is a “ding ding ding” it go through all this scene, it can give audience kind of mysterious feeling, and what gonna happen then...

I get another sound effect is when Pyle shot Drill, there is a sound effect like monster shout when falling down. Obviously in this movie Drill is a monster who is training whole bunch of young guy to be another killing monster. And the other sound we heard about is that conversation and the gun.

Contrast Dominants:

Apparently, Joker and Drill is wearing hat but Pyle doesn’t. I thought that stand for Joker and Drill is Pyle superior.

As we known, Pyle used to be a smile guy, but at last he go crazy and become a devil, at first of this scene Joker came into toliet and saw Pyle was sitting on closestool and there is strange expression on Pyle’s facial and say hi to Joker, he has become a kill mechine from a smile guy. He become worse when he shoot sergeant I think he is try release all his anger and dissatisfaction through his gun. After that Joker trying to calm Pyle down, i thought he calm down a little bit,cos he does not shoot Joker before he suicide.maybe Pyle consideration that Joker used to help him a lot so Pyle does not shoot him.

Character Movement:

In this scene characters are not move a lot except when Jocker is patrolling.

Lighting:

The lighting in this scene is very low key. There is a light come through the window and Joker hold a flashlight when patrolling, the whole scene color is dark, give audience kind of feeling scary and match with character feeling. then nothing much.

camera movement

In this scene most of used camera movement is tracking shot and stationary.

For example private joker is patrolling and that is tracking shot, then he got into toliet start conversation with Gomer Pyle, start use stationary until kill drill master and suicide.

camera angle

at first Pyle was sit to talk joker, camera angle is LA and HA, drictor want give audience kind of feeling-Joker is better than Pyle, and Pyle is a loser. Then Pyle stood up and show his gun skill, camera angle is change to OTS until Pyle suicide, that means Pyle feel equality between Joker, Drill.

Transition:

Most of transitions was used between shots are regular jump-cuts it could let this conversation going continuity and keep audience fevered feeling all the time.

short type

In this scene is just medium shot and long shot, and most of the colour is black and white and the lighting is just use artifical light from outside and torch.

Mise-en-scene:

This scene was interior scene and set in real place. there is just dark night, light, gun with bullet in this scene, and three main character, all that stuff give audience scarey feeling.

This movie use a lot panning and tracking shot give audience a strong visualimpact. As we all known vietnam war is heartless and merciless, drictor trying his best to express him feeling show his viewpoint of this war.In this movie I saw the process how young man become a kill machine under the training of instructor. When I saw Pyle go crazy I felt so sympathetic. Second part I saw private jocker get back his own humanity during the war I am so gratified at this result.

Anyway above is my little analysis about this movie, thanks for reading.

Full Metal Jacket (1987)

Director: Stanley Kubrick
Writers: Gustav Hasford
Stanley Kubrick
Stars: Matthew Modine
R. Lee Ermey
Vincent D’Onofrio

Duration:00:42:15-00:43:15(1 min)

Mise-en-scene:
This scene was set in the bathroom, three important actors
in the film involved in this scene.
It set in the night time when everyone else are sleeping,
the squad leader Joker founds Pyle was in the bathroom
alone with his M14 rifle which must not allowed. Put the
rifle here is not just for a set so that Pyle can use it later to
shoot the sergeant, it is also because the rifle is the only
thing he likes, the only thing that he’s good at, he shows
some actions like “left and right shoulder”, “lock and load”,
“order”.
He was so clam when sergeant came to him ,he gives
a strange smile which may lead audience to think that
something must be happen because his rifle was loaded
with full of bullets.

Colours:
The colour of the environment in this sequence are based
on grey with some light colour from outside of the window.
It creates a kind of cold and hopelessness feel to actively
affect audience.

Dialogue:
00:42:18
When Joker reminds Pyle if the sergeant find he’s loading
a gun they will in the world of shit, and then Pyle says“i am
in the world of shit”, he said it slowly but strongly.
Through this to reflects how bad he felt his life in the
marines,he keeps making mistakes and get everybody in
troubles, he can’t handle anymore like that.
So when he says “i am in the world of shit”, audience
could possibly know for what reasons he wants to kill both
himeself and thesergeant .

Sound:
The whole sequence use a heavy sound, and we can hear the
water dropped into sink,it is good to use them, simple but it
creates a feel of strange ,and make audience more focus on
actors’ action, to guess what’s might going to happen.
The dropped water sound could also symolize a slowly
dying life.At the time Pyle kills the sergeant, the dropped
water sound was stopped for a while, that symbolize one life
is over, and after that the sound went back on.
The volume of the sound increased when Pyle breath
before he kills the sergeant, and when the bullet came out
from the rifle, sound has also been increased, but other
sounds were disappeared at that moment, this gives a feel of
painful, a feel of death.
And before Pyle kills himself, the sound increased
again, audience can affect by all this well set up sound. It
gives them more feel to watch the film.

Editing

Editing Style:
This sequence completed by few long-take.
This is the tranditional way to show what’s happening in
the sequence.

Camera angle:
After Pyle kills the sergerant, camera shots from a
low-angle it creates a huge effect, sergerant is a man that
everyone afriad of,but he killed him,it seems unbelievable.
And then when he killed himself, the camera shots from
a high-angle,this gives a small effect that he’s dead.
The film use not much camera angle in this sequence, but
they all for reasons.

Depth of field:
Everything in the sequence are clearly been
setup, foreground and background are both in audience’s
focus, camera at the same height for most of the time so
that there is a balance between the foreground and the
background,we can see the theme of the sequence and
actors’ movement on every single shot.
When the sergeant is dead, the camera doesn’t goes
to take a extreme-close-up shot of his face, instead of
that, what audience can see is a shot involved all the
three actors, the sergeant lying on the floor,Joker’s got
shocked, and the camera shots from behind of Pyle, the
background and the sound still same as before the
sergerant dies. qiuet environment but make audience more
focus on Pyle to see what he is going to do next,it gives
them a opporunity to guess.

Deconstruction meanning :
This sequence is the turnning point of the film,it is also
been well set up,the theme of this sequence creates the way
for Plye to kill both himself and the sergerant, and most
importantly for this sequence is that although Pyle and the
sergerant are dead, but the audience will not forget them in
the second part of the film.

The Curious Case of Ben Jamin Button -yinzhi 2486

Posted by louise on Wednesday, December 15, 2010 , LABELS: | comments (0)

Briefly this move tells Ben Jamin is born as an unusual, an old man, he is growing and living y give ounger and younger in physically but older and older in mentally, he does not up his life, he likes to experience every different things that he is curious about and normal people does, such as be a sailor, at the mean time, the great love between him and his best friend also his lover -daisy since they are childhood, is an unforgettable memory of him.

In this film the technique part is the make up of both main act and actress Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett who play Ben Jamin and Daisy because Ben Jamin is born in backwards life time and Cate has to play Daisy since she is a teenage. Another thing is the dealing with their voice from old to young, from young to old. The way that director range this move is non-liner movie.

The main point in this move as my opinion is try to feel the feeling of what Ben Jamin feel in the movie such as when he accept he is unusual people, when he think about his life, when he see people dying and the love with Daisy.

DOG SOLDIERS

This film is a horror film. The director uses a lot of bloody fight. I was horrified by the movie. In this movie, the chase scene is the high point of the film. Only fourteen actors in this movie, and I find all the characters in the film are very real. This movie is talk about the 6 soldiers who are the members of the British Army Special Forces, they go to a unfrequented forest for a military exercise. On the same evening. They find there is another military unit died in this forest. At the same time. They heard the wail in the distance. They find there are lots of werewolves. A strife and slaughter was threatening. Soldiers are tried to hide themselves in the in a little wooden hut in forest. But the wooden hut is the lair of the werewolf......this movie make me feel the soldiers' despair and sense of helplessness. In 50 kilometers, is no one in there. This film is very true to life. So I think this film is worth seeing.
