Character Analysis - 3784

film: "Psycho"
director: Alfred Hitchcock
character: Marion Crane

Marion seems to be an ordinary woman, although when she has the opportunity she becomes a thief, stealing one of her boss' client's money and escaping.
From that on, Marion seems to be in a constant battle with herself, which shows her double-side throughout the film.
The mis-en-scene helps the viewers to see her double-sidedness:
- once she wears a white bra, and another time she appears wearing a black one
- her reflection in mirrors
- her attitude, being nervous after the theft, especially talking to police

Her own battle ends when she decides to come back and return the money, do the right thing. Although she finds her end at the Bates Motel without the chance of making up for her previous mistake.

Week 10 : GENRE

Posted by dr.dray on Monday, January 24, 2011 , LABELS: | comments (2)

Hi all Cinemaaa students!

Last week, we looked at the types of main genres, and the sub-genre categories as-well.

Just a note: Remember to only choose ONE main genre when answering a question in the exam. Do NOT put a sub-genre as your answer. Only if it asks you "What is the main genre and sub genre for this film?"

We saw the film Requiem For A Dream, which is a psychological (sub) Drama (main).

This movie used alot of new techniques of filmmaking - including a reverse POV and experimenting with high/low speeds.

Don't forget that your Assignment 2 is due this weekend! Latest submission on Sunday 11:59pm!!

This is also the final week you are watching a movie, as next week we are preparing for your Cinema Exams.

CINEMA EXAM
WEDNESDAY 9th FEB

I'm impressed..! In the beginning when it shows the guy suturing his own knee, I thought it was the kind of movie I wouldn't be able to watch it (if it was all about injuries, stitches, open bruises..). I'm glad I did! Even gladder for not having to see those things again along the movie

Michael Moore's sarcasm is absolutely entertaining and smart. He doesn't say out loud the healthcare system in US is awful, but he drives his viewers to that conclusion showing facts and other people's opinions and tragic stories.
By going to other countries for a comparison, he definitely doesn't need to say anything else.

My highlights were:

*The 22-year-old woman who is considering to marry her Canadian "friend" for free healthcare, and the fact that at the end, Michael Moore left a website for Americans willing to marry Canadians for the same reason .
There's a HUGE "business" in US which non-Americans pay thousands of dollars to marry an American so they can be granted a Greencard and live the American Dream there. Well..they sure don't think about healthcare until they actually need it.
I once met a family in US who knew about my plans to come to Australia, they were very excited for me! And they confessed Australia was in their plans too if the healthcare system doesn't get any better...
To be honest, I don't know how the healthcare is here in Australia...should I be so worried for getting sick as I used to be in US? I could never enjoy snowboard, one of the reasons was I couldn't afford having any broken arm or leg (which happened to a friend of mine while snowboarding there)

*9/11 rescuers finding the solution of their lives in CUBA! Seriously, that was the best part considering all the history between the two countries!
Michael Moore does have many enemies, but that's what you got for showing the truth.

I finished Sicko wanting to watch all other Moore's documentaries!

OLD BOY (2003)
Director: Chan-hook, Park
Main Character: Dae-su, Oh

Dae-Su is kidnapped and thrown into a locked room with no windows and only a television set for company. As the weeks turn into months, he works out, trains himself and tries to find a way out of his cell, slowly going insane in the process, especially after learning that he has been framed for his wife's murder while imprisoned.

He tries to kill himself on several occasions, but when he gets too out of control (or just needs a shave and haircut), he is gassed unconscious by his unknown captors.

Oh Dae-Su occupies his time with teaching himself to fight, shadowboxing in his room and exercising to keep himself in shape.

The acting is excellent all round, but the character of Oh Dae-su, played by Choi Min-sik.

In a pivotal fight scene, Dae-Su fights his way through a hallway full of gangsters armed only with a hammer, which Park shoots with a single camera following him from one end to the other without a single edit. This shows his strong body and mind and shows perfect character in this movie.

Megamind is a aline who has super power n is sent to earth by his parents who he is still a baby.He has a big blue head and small blue body. He is a bit unlucky because the location he lands is a prison compare another super baby called metro man  who is sent to earth at the same day with him. Here it is a big turning point they have different education ,are risen by different people , these all make people have different attitude to them. People like metro man dislike megamind because metro always save and solve the problems those megamind make.Thats why at the begin of this movie all the people will think that megamind is a bad guy but actually he is not. After finishing the whole movie i just only can say his bad is just naughty. He turns to be naughty because he wants get peoples' attention, he needs someone to care about his feeling and he needs to be loved. He beats with metro man because he feel he wanna get peoples' attention, i can say he just a bit give up on to be a good guy.He does not think people will like him anyway and also he feels longly we can see from after he wins metro man and controls metro city. He just realizes these are not what he wants. Finally he just be himself the rest part of movie because he get encouraged by his lovely lady, he is trust by. Here it is a second turning point he becomes good guy not naughty anymore.

Over all we can see megamind is a sensitive, not confident, insecurity person due to his childhood background but actually and basically inside his heart he wants people just give him chance to prove himself, to build up his confident and love him more. Anyway he is successful.

3530 Shane Character Analyze

The movie is a comedy about car racing and how to build the confidence for youth.

The main character is Takumi Fujiwara, but I'm not gonna analyze him. In my opinion his father is a key character in the movie.

In most of the audience he's a bad father who's without sense of responsibility. Smoking and drinking all the time and very randy even to his son's girlfriend-_- He also always beat his son and make him a introversion.

But actually he's very helpful no matter in the movie or out of the movie.

In the movie he's the trainer of Takumi Fujiwara. He trained his son in his own way to make him a really awesome car racer. Like when Takumi Fujiwara's TOYOTA AE86 is dead, he help him to fix it and change the engine to make it much more powerful.

There're also some detail to show he's really care about his son which is his smile! When he knows his son win the GTR, he smiled. When he know he'll race with FC, he smiled. And everytime he ask about the car racing knowledge, he always smiles. So we can see that he's bad temper didn't stop his son's way to be a succesful car racer.

Out of the movie, he's duty is make the movie much more funny. Everytime audience saw him, they know some funny story will happen. The second duty is to tell how awesome his son is. We can know much more information why Takumi Fujiwara is so powerful by he's phone call to the boss of the gas station.

Also when Takumi Fujiwara break up with his girlfriend, he seems like really care about that, that means he's a good father anyway. That's why I really love this character.

The character that I am going to talk about is Nine from the movie named “9”.

Kind of character

Nine is major and protagonist (heroes) character because he his is the last soul puppet which holds the secret for destroying the mother machine. He is

Describe Character

Nine was made by a puppet with a part of creator’s soul. He wares glasses, which has a meaning that he is cleaver and curious. In the movie Nine is curious because press the button that he want to know what the button is. The character acting is against it stereotyping because his body looks thin and weak but in the movie he is strong and moves fast. The name that was given to him is Nine and that number is significant because at the beginning of the movie, the creator died after his creator Nine. It shows that he is the last soul puppet and there are 8 soul puppets like him. In the movie, the creator made 9 soul puppets, which use his own soul for fixing his mistake. It is because the creator is the one who build the mother machine and the mother machine ruins entire living in the world. The meaning in each number is the order and clues because each number was created by a little different ways. If they can collect all the ways to create all numbers, they will find the key to kill the mother machine

Nine never change in his personality but thought. He always helps his friends for the danger and he is not giving up in anything easily. Furthermore, he is the one who revives the mother machine by his curious. He always blames himself because with his curious, his friends’ souls are absorbed and die. He thinks many ways how to stop the mother machine. At first, he thinks the way to destroy it but it doesn’t work but after Six’s soul is absorbed and he gets a clue from Six before he dies, he change the way of thinking to seek a key to end the mother machine. Nine always thinks how to protect his friends from his false and at the last battle, he shows his responsibility by scarifying his soul for the mother because when the mother machine is absorbing a soul, she will show her weak point.

This character is very interesting in movie because it holds the key to end this situation but he doesn’t know and he is the one who open the mother machine and made many of his friends die. This character is focus on it role because all the time he try to stop the mother machine.

Nine try to fix the entire mistake he did. His motivation is to revenge for his friend and take his friends’ souls back by killing the mother machine

At the climax of Spike Lee's 1989 drama "Do The Right Thing," the eternal battle between love and hate teeters on a razor's edge. The young black man Radio Raheem has been choked to death by white police after a fight with a Brooklyn pizzeria owner. A seething crowd gathers in front of the shop.

Lee's character, Mookie, a black pizza deliveryman, stands between the crowd and the shop. He's shoulder-to-shoulder with Sal, the shop's Italian owner. They exchange looks of confusion, betrayal and regret.
The crowd stares at Mookie. He's on the wrong side. Mookie moves over to his brothers, rubs his face, wrestling with the weight of the moment. Then he decides.

"Hate!" screams Mookie as he hurls the metal can through the pizzeria's plate glass window. The dam bursts. The mob destroys the shop in a frenzy that was both inevitable and completely avoidable.

Much has changed since "Do The Right Thing" announced Lee's special gifts to the world. The police choke hold that killed Radio Raheem — a fictionalization of the real death of Michael Stewart in New York City — has long been outlawed. Life on the ravaged Brooklyn block where Lee filmed the movie has improved. Ronald Reagan has given way to Barack Obama.

Director Spike Lee answers questions about his 1989 film “Do The Right Thing" on June 15 in New York. “White people still ask me why Mookie threw the can through the window,” he says.

But for every measure of undeniable progress, "Do The Right Thing" also points to the divides that remain.

In May, a black New York City undercover cop who was running after a suspect with his gun drawn was shot to death by a white officer. Boarded-up buildings, broken windows and jobless young men still populate that Brooklyn block. And Lee, who wrote, produced and directed the film, insists the racial disconnect at its heart still exists.

"White people still ask me why Mookie threw the can through the window," Lee said in an interview. "Twenty years later, they're still asking me that."

"No black person ever, in 20 years, no person of color has ever asked me why."

Something new to say

That question is what made "Do The Right Thing" so explosive. Some writers speculated, erroneously, that it would incite riots.

"People were fearful of the backlash," said Rosie Perez, who played Mookie's Puerto Rican girlfriend, Tina. "A lot of things happening in the movie were happening in real life. People were afraid when the truth, although a little exaggerated, was put up on the screen for everyone to see."

Meanwhile, Lee got rave reviews from many influential critics. Roger Ebert cried after watching it at the Cannes Film Festival, where it lost to "sex, lies and videotape."

Audiences definitely were not prepared.

Most serious films about race, like "In the Heat of the Night," "To Kill A Mockingbird" and "The Defiant Ones," ended with understanding or even brotherhood. And for every ambitious movie like "Watermelon Man" or "Black Like Me," there were a half-dozen violent, sexy ghetto shoot-em-ups — "blaxploitation" flicks.

Lee had something new to say. "In just three feature films," critic Gene Siskel wrote then, "Spike Lee has given us more genuine and varied images of black people than in the last 20 years of American movies put together."

Today, Ebert says "Do The Right Thing" should have won the Oscar for best picture. "It was so honest about the way people really feel," he said via e-mail. "No hypocrisy. It generated grief and left us with a central question of American society."

The best picture of 1989, according to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences: "Driving Miss Daisy," about the friendship between a white Atlanta woman and her black chauffeur.

It ends on a Thanksgiving in the 1960s, with the chauffeur feeding Miss Daisy a piece of pie.

‘This is a really powerful film’

The trash can almost stayed on the curb. Paramount offered Lee the biggest budget for his film, but executives there wanted to change the ending.

"They just couldn't understand why Mookie throws the trash can through Sal's window," said Hollywood veteran Tom Pollock, who gave the film the green light when he was chairman of Universal Pictures. "Quite honestly, I didn't understand either, until it was explained to me by Spike."

Pollock agreed to give Lee creative control. After the film was done, Pollock only had one problem. At the time, the movie ended the morning after the riot, when Mookie visits Sal at his burned-out shop and demands his $250 salary for the week.

"The movie offered no hope whatsoever at that time," Pollock said. "All I said at the time was, 'This is a really powerful film, but we can't go out of here being totally depressed that there is no future for this country in terms of race.' "

Lee responded by adding two quotes at the end. The first, from Martin Luther King Jr., preached nonviolence: "The old law of an eye for an eye leaves everybody blind." The second, from Malcolm X, advocated self-defense against "bad people" who block racial progress: "I don't even call it violence when it's self-defense, I call it intelligence."

"It got misconstrued that it had to be either Dr. King or Malcolm," Lee said. "It was never meant to be that you had to pick one or the other. These are the two most prominent African-American leaders of the 20th century, and they both wanted the same thing."

The quotes, the trash can, the title of the film — like a painting or a piece of music, they all meant different things to different people. And they still do.

The riot is sparked by the militant Buggin' Out, who demands that Sal add some black people to his all-Italian Wall of Fame. Buggin' notes that Sal's all-black and Puerto Rican clientele provides his livelihood. Sal responds that if Buggin' wants to make decorating decisions, he should start his own business.

"They both had good points," said Lee, with a challenging smile.

‘Nothing is absolutely black and white’

Buggin' tries to organize a boycott, but his black friends have no problem with Sal or his wall. He finally enlists Radio Raheem, whose enormous boom box blasting Public Enemy's "Fight the Power" has offended both Sal and various black residents.

"It's absolutely one of Spike's most interesting and profound films because of that ambiguity," said Giancarlo Esposito, who played Buggin' Out. "In our lives, nothing is absolutely black and white, because none of us are the same. So we're not going to all act the same."

As night falls on a long, broiling day, Buggin' Out and Radio Raheem invade Sal's Famous to press their case, with "Fight The Power" playing at full blast.

Throughout the film, Sal has expressed his love for the neighborhood and its residents, over the racist objections of his son Pino. Sal has been lenient with Mookie's meandering deliveries, even saying he's "like a son to me." Sal's shop would have been closed when Buggin' and Raheem arrived if he hadn't unlocked it to feed a few neighborhood kids.

But after Raheem doesn't turn down his radio, and Buggin' calls Sal a guinea, Sal drops the bomb — "Nigger!" — and destroys the radio with a bat.

Raheem attacks Sal, the police arrive, and Raheem ends up dead.

As his body is carried away in the back of a police car, a black cop runs alongside.

‘It still has a long way to go’

Twenty years ago, amid racial battles stoked by everyone from Lee Atwater to Tawana Brawley, Lee's film seemed like another salvo. Today, the smoke has cleared, revealing a less contentious world, but one where many of the issues raised by "Do the Right Thing" still resonate.

Take the Bedford-Stuyvesant block where the movie was filmed. In 1989 there was a crack house and abandoned buildings there; Sal's pizzeria and the Korean grocery were built on empty lots.

Today, the block is clean, the brownstones well-tended and the residents working class. Yet those lots are still empty, home to cars in various stages of repair. A boarded-up storefront church sits on one corner.
Four young black men stand on the opposite corner at midday, in front of an apartment building with a broken window in the front vestibule. Another man emerges from the building and asks if this reporter's employer is hiring.

People on the block talk about the white people who are moving in, although almost none are evident at this time of day.

"This is the suburban part of the ghetto," said Rachel Ward, who has lived there for all of her 52 years.
"It's come a long way," she said, "but it still has a long way to go."

That's exactly how Lee feels about race in the age of the first black president.

"I'll tell you one statement I don't agree with: Post-racial society. What does that mean? That we're past it?" He snorts derisively. "We're not there, we're definitely not there. Those are people wishing upon a star. It's not like it's gonna be presto change-o, abracadabra, Obama Obama — it doesn't work like that.

"One of the biggest criticisms about 'Do The Right Thing' is, 'Spike Lee didn't provide the answer to end racism and prejudice.' That's not my job, I don't have the answer for that. The film was to show what I felt at the time were issues that needed to be dealt with."
But still no answers, 20 years later?

"It doesn't matter," Lee said. "I'm not gonna sit here and lie and say I have the answer to end racism and prejudice in America."

Scene Analysis

I would like to take something about Lost in Translation. The scene which I’m going to analyze is the last few minutes of the movie.

Scene about the leading people is going to be separated to each other. The man sitting in the car saw the girl the crowdy street, and then he came out to the girl. They hug, kiss and talked a little bit, then left each other in the street.

At first I would like to talk about the Mise-en scene.

In this scene, the first attract us is the crowdy main street. Many people, shops, busy traffic. The man can see the girl from inside car, it tells us they are the two people that are so special, so secluded from this city. And shows that the girl is so important to the man. The car using here I think also shows the difference class between the man and the girl. He is at the high class of the society, but not the girl. It can be told the position is not that important in their relationship.

The actors here are mean to perform how the strong feelings they want to let each other know. The hug here is the best way to express the emotions. The time at the last they go away to their Owen worlds, they were both smiling coz they already got what they need, the understand between each other.

Sound at the first is the crowdy background. Its like the leadings are so separate from this city. They do not care about what ever happen around them but each other. Then some music came out when they said goodbye to each other then turn around. the music keep going to the end of the movie. It is a kind of light music that tells us their mood at that moment both are good, even happy.

The lighting in this scene is normal. It is a simply fine story that can easily happen in any people's daily life. Coz almost all the people in the world do feel lonely in somehow case. It is like a real story that happens in a real world. So the lighting here just normal using the original color and lighting.

Then I am going to talk about the Cinema Tography.

In this scene many medium shot are used. And then they hug each other using the long shot. The long shot here take the leading actors inside and the background street. The camera focus them so that make background blur shows like there are only them two in this world however the world here is pretty much crowdy.

The camera movement in this scene used tracking. The camera follow the man actor from he get out of the car until he find and close to the actress. Then the camera turn around like from the actress's side to see the actor. Using these techniques to perform how is that and the process of their meeting each other. In the end of the movie, the man go back to his car with smiling on his face, the camera begin to move to the buildings, the scenery outside. To take around this modern city shows like the camera just follow the man's eyes sight to let us have a look at this city again. But this time is not feeling that lonely, instead, there seems like contains some special emotion inside. And the camera angle here used the low angle to take the big city outside the car. The main idea here maybe is to start with the man's eyesight to take around this city. And from the actor transit to the city stuffs through the man's eyesight as well.
