Kill Bill film review
Kill Bill is my favorite movie in the last ten years. My favorite scene in the movie is the cartoon scene which about O ren’s childhood. Actually, the whole move is like a cartoon. That’s the reason why I like it. But, there are still a vast number of people do not like it. It is a film which talks about an assassin’s revenge.

Firstly, this scene is the only cartoon scene in the whole movie. The whole cartoon scence is about O ren’s bloody childhood. O ren is one of the main characters in the dead list which create by the bride. O ren’s parents are all killed by the Japanese yakusa boss matzu moto. This 8 minutes cartoon shows that O ren’s parents dead in front of her. And she killed matzu moto at 12 years old. Then, she becomes the most dangerous assassin in the world. The whole scene is wonderful, but I will only talk about the first minutes. This part of the cartoon happened in O ren’s house. She hide herself under the bed when those yakusas killing her parents. The first shot type is extremely close up to little O ren’s eyes. It seems that she is scared. It is a very good way to make audients curious the situation of the little girl’s family. Then the director uses the shot type called point of view with tracking three times from little O ren’s eyes to show the situation in the house. It shows that the yakusa boss matzo moto and her parents’ location.

Secondly, the medium shot shows the fight between O ren’s father and two of the yakusa members. The light in this part of cartoon is important too. Because of that it is a little bit dark in the house during that time. The light from those two small light balls at the top is not enough for the whole place. It seems that the light here is the symbol of dangerous.

However, the music stopped for a second. It is believed that there are always something bad happened if the music stops suddenly. Then the point of view from O ren’s mother shows that there is a samurai sword through O ren’s father’s body. Then, the camera panning from right side of the sword to the left. It clearly shows that the yakusa’s smile. Then audience can see O ren’s shoulder to her dad with blood in front of the bed. Then the yakusa put the sword into O ren’s father’s head.

Then, the point of view from little O ren’s eyes tilting up from her father’s head to the top of the samurai sword, then the yakusa’s face show up. It is a good way to show that the yakusa’s bloodiness. It also shows that yakusa control all the during that time, because of that camera tilting up from O ren’s father’s head to that yakusa’s smiling face and little girl hide herself under the bed

Finally, the camera close up to O ren’s face, that angry face is not match this 9 years old little girl. Because of that little O ren hide her under the bed. Those yakusas did not find her. Her parents are all dead but the little still alive. It is a symbol of O ren’s revenge later.

In this part of the movie, close up being used many times, It is a very good to character’s emotion.

Scene Analysis -- 3616 Xixi

A memory inside a memory, Memento is a complicated head spinning adventure. Leonard is determined to avenge his wife's murder. However, unable to remember anything that happens day-to-day due to a condition he sustained, short term memory loss, he has to write himself note after note that still don't mean anything after he falls asleep. The film goes back in time to reveal each little bit of the puzzle as he tries to find out the person who killed his wife and makes the audience feel just as confused as he is. The narrative closely follows a phone call Pearce has in which he talks about Sammy Jankis a former client of his who he believed had the same condition. The film takes an unexpected twist as the two characters have a lot more in common than is initially put across.

The one minute scene that I choose is from 1 hour and 9 minute to 1 hour and 10 minute. This one minute scene is the last part of Leonard answering the phone. This is a Black & White scene shows that the story of Sammy which Leonard is talking about is not real.

This is when Leonard answering the phone and talking about Sammy’s story, he is just taking off the pledget on his new tattoo. In this black & white scene, the shot type is close up. It shows this hided tattoo to give audiences the feeling of mystery, to let audiences guess what Leonard wrote on this tattoo.
The lighting in black & white scene is soft, this may show that Leonard’s emotion is not variation very much when he is telling stories.

This scene is also uses close up shot type. This time, film shows us the tattoo “NEVER ANSWER THE PHONE” when Leonard is answering the phone. Leonard has short memory lost that is the reason why he uses tattoo to remind all important things to himself. This tattoo is a milestone of this movie. Before this scene, audiences know lots of information of Sammy and the story in Leonard’s limited memory. From now, audiences start to question that who is on the other side of this phone? Also from this milestone, music has started, it shows us there are something gonna happened.

In this close up shot, Leonard start asks who is on the other side of this phone. From Leonard’s eyes, audiences can see scare very clear. In this shot, the actor’s performance brings us the felling of Leonard very easily.

After Leonard’s asking, the person who is on the other side of this phone rings off this calling. Then the camera angle change to looking down. It shows that Leonard is confused and small now, because he knows nothing about that person who was calling him and told lots of things about Sammy to him in a situation that he can not answer ant phones. From now, the music started getting louder to show the fear of Leonard. The soft light that is only from the window also shows Leonard’s feeling to audiences.

Kill Bill
Scene analysis

Director
: Quentin Tarantino
Starring: Uma Thurman / Vivica A. Fox /Daryl Hannah / David Carradine
Duration:01:10:00-01:11:04

Mise-en-scene This is scene is about the revenge of the protagonist. The scene is set in the japans club where many people were entertaining. all of a sudden, the Bride (played by Uma Thurman) who seizes the Sophie fatale(played by Julie Dreyfuss) shout O-Ren Ishii(played by Lucy Liu) out and this is the first time they met each other after four years .then there will be lots of fighting frame.
Character Costume:
Protagonist :From the Bride Clothes, the whole style is yellow, which is really easy to remind audiences of the famous martial arts actor (Bruce Lee ).because bride’s clothes is pretty similar to the Costume that Bruce lee wear in the film named 《Game of Death》. In many people memory ,Bruce Lee always is the protagonist and has excellent KongFu. Bride wear this clothes, which is obvious that bride is a protagonist with excellent KongFu.
Antagonist: From the color of the clothes ,the O-Ren Ishii(played by Lucy Liu) wear the white Japanese kimono .and other people around her wear the black clothes, which has big contrast. Exserting the O-Ren Ishii who is antagonist. and other is her underling.

Lighting:
In this scene, High-key Lighting is used in the most time except for this scene above this is not really bright light and has a little bit red color light on the scene ,which has bloody and horrible feeling and suit the recollection.

Sound and Music:
This scene includes the diagetic Sound and non-diagetic Sound, for the non-Diegetic sound there is two types background music one is the feeling like ready for battle ,another music that appear when both of the character stare each other fill with revenge feeling .For the diagetic Sound protagonist said : you and I have unfinished business .”to shout O-Ren Ishii(played by Lucy Liu) out

Character relationship:
Firstly, The Bride shout out O-Ren Ishii and seizes the Sophie fatale who is underling of O-Renishii ;, then when they see each other .From Bride’s eyes filling with revenge, and then cut Sophie fatal hand .From this it is easy to understand Bride and O-renishii is enemy rather then friend.

Editing:

The first frame,At the beginning of the scene, when the bride shout out O-RenI shii , the screen is split to show each of the scenes at the same time, it make the atmosphere more tension and show that is the beginning of battle. The second frame,There are two frame combined in one, that also make it more tension ,the reason is that from this shot people can understand how the Bride hate O-Ren Ishii .Seeing O-Ren Ishii can make the Bride thing of the past evens.

Cinematography
Shot type: Extreme close up
It can make the the atmosphere more tension. Extreme close up can describe the Bride of the inner activities .audience can know how she hate O-Ren Ishii from eyes

Extreme long shot
It can show how many underling O-Ren Ishii have. .which can show that O-Ren Ishii have power and influence

Camera angle:
In this scene, the high angle and low angle are used. The low angle is not only the bride’s visual angle and also show the O-Ren Ishii look powerful

Camera movement:
Zoom in

The scene is used, this can show the bride hatred more and more intense, which can increase the tension

Depth of field:
It use Landscape focus .where the background is clear and foreground is blurred. All of this is used to make audience focus on that .

And this is the background is change from blurred to clear. All of this is used to make audience focus on that .

Deconstructed meaning:
The meaning of the whole sequence is to show the fist meeting of them in four years.

Scene Analysis

Lost In Translation

3587, Hyeonjin

Scene overview

I chose the last 2 scenes, scene 117, and 118 (01:33:48-01:35:55, 2mins and 7secs). In these scenes, the male protagonist finds the female protagonist on his way to go back to his country, and he stops his car and goes to see female protagonist for a while and then, keeps going his way behind the scenery of Tokyo.

Scene Analysis

Mise-en-scene

Sets of these scenes are on the street for scene 117, and on the road for scene 118. These two sets tell us that female protagonist still stay on the street, in Tokyo, and male protagonist is on the road to leave Tokyo. And Sofia Coppola, the director of this movie, used dark tone of colour, according to lecture file of AIT's introduction to cinema class, it says it is grey colour but, I would like to say it is dark blue which is one of director's favourite colours, to express two protagonists' loneliness and also the sets also lonely place for them because of different culture and language.

Also, Sofia used natural light to keep her dark tone of colour and natural mood of these scenes. And about actor's performance and costume, male protagonist wear a suit and female protagonist wear casual style of cloth because this two types of fashion style show that different social position between two protagonist so that although they are love each other, there is wall they have to brake down to be together besides, despite they are being separate each other in these scenes, they smiled and they do not act like they are sad through this two protagonists' act, we can guess some hopeful future between them the director does not show us clean ending story though.

About sound, there is only one diegetic sound is used in these two scenes, male protagonist said 'alright.' When he gets on his car again, and except for this diegetic sound, there is only one non-diegetic sound is used as background music, 'just like honey' by 'Jesus And Mary Chain' and again, from this music's calm and peaceful mood and lovely lyrics, although some people say that their music is psychic and they had some violent history about some of their performances, we can guess that something hopeful future between two protagonists.

Cinematography and editing

Shot

In these 2 scenes, the most mused 3 shots are Close-up, medium shot, and long-shot but I would like to focus on medium shot because I think medium shots in these scenes are used in uncommon way of its normal purpose. I learned that long-shot is used to describe actor and environment around actor and close-up is used to show some specific description such as actor's emotion but, in these scenes, I can see both functions in medium shot I think it is because of that since the two protagonists are separating each other, Sofia Coppola may need some environment around protagonists in a dynamic shot but, she also need to catch protagonists' emotional acting in a same time to express that although they are separating, they still can smile each other because they know some good future will wait for them.

Movement

About movement in these scenes, I think there are two movements were used Hand-held and panning also, these two movements are shown at the same time in scene 118 when the road to go back to male protagonist's country was shown. The reason why these two movements were used is that we can know protagonist is reminding about time he has spent in Tokyo with panning and since he left female protagonist in Tokyo, he misses her but he and she still have their own legal family so, it is not so easy for them to focus on only their love. Through panning and hand-held, we can see these kinds of reminding and protagonist's unstable mind.

Angle

n/a

Depth of field

We can see several times of using about shallow focus in these scenes easily because main object of these scenes are those two protagonist so that focusing on them make audience's attraction to them easily and also, by using shallow focus, director can say something to audience that two protagonists are isolated from their environment, Tokyo, so they are lonely.

Editing

For the record, I think I should say that there is no editing in these scenes but I would like to say that there are two editing skills in scene 118, Long-take and montage but half of them each. During I observe scene 118 over and over again, I found that although shots are changed irregularly but it is hard to find that unless keep watching this scene several times like me. In my opinion, since this scene is expression about male protagonist's reminding of life in Tokyo he has had, these irregular changing of shots, just like two mixed editing skill long-take and montage, represent eye blinking when people remind something so that during watching shots, audience can be familiar with male protagonist's mind.

Deconstructed meaning

When I learned about this movie in the class, teacher told me that Sofia Coppola, the director of this movie, said there is no certain ending story and it depends on audience's imagination. That is the reason why I chose these two scenes to analyse because I thought that I can know a bit more if I analyse these ending scenes and I guess it works.

As I analysed above, all the deconstructed meaning of each parts are going to get hopeful future between two protagonists such as actor's performance, shots etc. Besides, not only happy ending of this movie's story, but also I learn something about life from analysing these scenes which is that no matter where people are in, and what kind of different culture people have, isolation from the society is happened to them so, all people are lonely but, like these two protagonists, there is always hope we called love. That's what I learned and understood from this analysing.
