Scene Analysis -- 3616 Xixi

**Posted by CeeCee at 1:21 AM

A memory inside a memory, Memento is a complicated head spinning adventure. Leonard is determined to avenge his wife's murder. However, unable to remember anything that happens day-to-day due to a condition he sustained, short term memory loss, he has to write himself note after note that still don't mean anything after he falls asleep. The film goes back in time to reveal each little bit of the puzzle as he tries to find out the person who killed his wife and makes the audience feel just as confused as he is. The narrative closely follows a phone call Pearce has in which he talks about Sammy Jankis a former client of his who he believed had the same condition. The film takes an unexpected twist as the two characters have a lot more in common than is initially put across.

The one minute scene that I choose is from 1 hour and 9 minute to 1 hour and 10 minute. This one minute scene is the last part of Leonard answering the phone. This is a Black & White scene shows that the story of Sammy which Leonard is talking about is not real.

This is when Leonard answering the phone and talking about Sammy’s story, he is just taking off the pledget on his new tattoo. In this black & white scene, the shot type is close up. It shows this hided tattoo to give audiences the feeling of mystery, to let audiences guess what Leonard wrote on this tattoo.
The lighting in black & white scene is soft, this may show that Leonard’s emotion is not variation very much when he is telling stories.

This scene is also uses close up shot type. This time, film shows us the tattoo “NEVER ANSWER THE PHONE” when Leonard is answering the phone. Leonard has short memory lost that is the reason why he uses tattoo to remind all important things to himself. This tattoo is a milestone of this movie. Before this scene, audiences know lots of information of Sammy and the story in Leonard’s limited memory. From now, audiences start to question that who is on the other side of this phone? Also from this milestone, music has started, it shows us there are something gonna happened.

In this close up shot, Leonard start asks who is on the other side of this phone. From Leonard’s eyes, audiences can see scare very clear. In this shot, the actor’s performance brings us the felling of Leonard very easily.

After Leonard’s asking, the person who is on the other side of this phone rings off this calling. Then the camera angle change to looking down. It shows that Leonard is confused and small now, because he knows nothing about that person who was calling him and told lots of things about Sammy to him in a situation that he can not answer ant phones. From now, the music started getting louder to show the fear of Leonard. The soft light that is only from the window also shows Leonard’s feeling to audiences.
