The first few years Andy had nothing to do, but because of his banking talent. He mad the Captain of the guards called Byron Hadley (Clancy Brown) gets his brother’s bequest with free tax. And the purpose of Andy is just some beer for his best friends in the prison. It seems that Andy become famous in the Shawahank prison. After this he helped all the guards fix the tax problems. And also he met his best friend of life called Red (Morgan Freeman). The warden called Norton wants to wash his dirt money by using Andy’s talent. Before he leaves, he told Red the place he would go, and finally, Andy and Red met each other in Mexico. And the Warden killed himself in the prison, because Andy send all the file about the dirty money to the newspaper office.

Themes
It seems that The Shawshank Redemption is just a film about prison break. But the main purpose of this film is telling people that “hope” is the best thing in human life, whatever how bad is your life. The Shawshank Redemption is an allegory for maintaining one's feeling of self worth when placed in a hopeless position. The integrity of Andy Dufresne is an important theme in the story line, especially in prison, where integrity is lacking.

MISE-EN-SCENE:
The Shawshank Redemption, released in 1994, was the best drama film directed by Frank Darabont. This film is 140 minutes long with English Language. Tim Robins and morgon Freeman make the film in a very high level. It is a good way to tell the main purpose by using this kind of story. Frank use Andy’s sad story to show the good things in life. The Shawshank Redemption received a limited released on September 23, 1994, and made over $727,000 on 33 screens in its first weekend. It received a wide release on October 7, 1994.

Sound and Diegesis
The music of this movie is very good too. The music used to convey and mood. The majority of the score consists of dark piano music, which plays along the main character's role at Shawshank.

WEEK 6: ANALYSE, NOT SUMMARISE

Posted by dr.dray on Thursday, December 9, 2010 , LABELS: | comments (0)

 Good day CINEMA monsters,

This week, we pretty much talked about your assignment that is due very soon, the Scene Analysis.

Remember: Do NOT write a Scene Review or Scene Summary.

When we analyse something, we deconstruct it to find hidden layers that have a deeper meaning than what we originally believed.

After we talked about Auteur Theory, and also discussed Martin Scorsese a bit.

Then we also noticed his style of filmmaking, which can be present in the Michael Jackson MTV for "BAD", directed by Scorsese in the late 1980's.

PLEASE go to the GOODIES box on the right hand side of the blog and view the sample scene analyses if you still want a better idea on how to write your assignment.

Check the Week 6 Lecture Notes for help as well for the structure of your assignment. Email Dray or Rahul for extra help as well. (Also if you want us to read your work early to let you know how your going)

Happy Writing!

Ocean’s Eleven

Credits:

Director: Steven Soderbergh

Writers: George Clayton Johnson (1960 story), Jack Golden Russell (1960 story), Harry Brown, Charles Lederer and Ted Griffin.

Actors: George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, Andy Garcia and Julia Roberts.

Narrative:

Danny Ocean wants to score the biggest heist in history. He combines an eleven team member, including Frank Catton, Rusty Ryan and Linus Caldwell. Their target is The Bellagio, the Mirage and the MGM Grand. All casinos owned by Terry Benedict. It's not going to be easy, as they plan to get in secretly and out with $150 million.

MISE-EN-SCENE:

Ocean's Eleven, released in 2001, was the first film of a trilogy of heist films directed by Steven Soderbergh. This big budget crime-thriller remake of the 1960s Rat Pack favourite conveys the intricately thrilling plot where Daniel Ocean leads a rag-tag group of con artists and ex-cons for the monumental heist of 3 major Las Vegas Casinos. This sequence is significant because it sets up the diegesis of the film and also gives us an insight into the character of the protagonist. Also, structurally, the set up of the heist is crucial to setting up the audiences high expectations and apprehensions of how something of this scale can be achieved smoothly.

Eat Pray Love - 3784

Posted by cindy on Wednesday, December 1, 2010 , LABELS: | comments (0)

"Eat Pray Love" is a movie about a New York writer who takes some time off and spends a year traveling after her divorce. She goes to the three "I's:" Italy (to eat), India (to pray), and finally to Indonesia (where she finds love).
Based on the book of same name by Liz Gilbert, I would say the movie lacks the emotions which readers of the book experience.
In the movie, Liz Gilbert, the protagonist, seems much more a selfish person than in the book. While in the book we can sort of understand and "see" her suffering and unhappiness before divorce, in the movie we only see a selfish woman who seems unhappy for apparently no reason.
Regarding "mis-en-scene," the places were well chosen to represent the countries Liz Gilbert goes, such as Naples and the pizza place in Italy, as well as the gorgeous places in Bali.
As most of the time, in my opinion , books are better than the movie version Eat Pray Love is not an exception. Although I still recommend the movie.

PS: I am curious to see if there will be a movie also of the following book "Committed" - her life after Bali with the new love

WEEK 5: DECONSTRUCTION

Posted by dr.dray on , LABELS: | comments (0)

- Patrick Bateman, peeling his facial mask in American Psycho.

Greetings fellow analysts,

So this week, instead of having discussion of our weekly movie, Taxi Driver, we had a 2 hour lecture about deconstruction, as this will be your first assignment.

Remember: If you are still confused about deconstruction, just think about an onion. An onion is like a film. It can be understood by just the first layer of skin; however, you are able to peel the onion deeper and deeper - until there is nothing left to peel off.

DUE DATE:
Check JIVI for your due date. It is set to be before your Christmas break (17th December), but you should check JIVI in case the date changes.

This gives you 2 weeks and a bit to work on your assignment, which should be a minimum of 700 words long. (Thats pretty much 2 pages including screenshots and a introduction/conclusion... Easy..)

For our deconstruction lecture, we had a guest lecturer - Dr Bennett - who came in to talk to you guys. He agreed to deconstruct his very own real Ed Hardy T-shirt, so consider yourself lucky if you felt it. (Your not allowed to feel it when Dr Bennett wears it... Don't even try... Its scary)

Dr Bennett loves deconstructing things, especially films, because he is one of those people who has an eye for detail, and loves to know every single tiny bit of fact. So you can nickname him
The Deconstructor next time you see him!

Now I have noticed that you guys arn't really being active on the blog - Yes, even if you have posted a movie analysis already - You should still be checking the blog at least twice a week, and commenting on my posts or other student's posts!

You can even post up things that relate to films we saw in class, like if you know a really cool fact about a film, and Dray doesn't know, please post it. Someone will read it. (Um, I guess that someone is me... ><)

Well you guys should at least be deciding what scene you want to analyse, and next week for the movie viewing, we are watching Lost In Translation by Sofia Coppola. Then in tutorial, we are going to look at past Scene Analyses, as well as discuss the two films we just viewed.

Any questions about anything, please comment at the bottom, OR email!!!

Goodnight!

- Dray

PS: If you were interested in the two films we presented during Deconstruction, the first one is called American Psycho by Mary Harron , and Rules Of Attraction by Roger Avary. Both films are based on the novels by Brett Easton-Ellis, a dude with a really crazy imagination. That's why I had to see him in person. Cheers!
